Before a computer can be managed with MOM 2005, it must first be discovered by MOM.

To perform computer discovery, open the Administrator Console, expand Administration, then Computers. Right click on Computer Discovery Rules and select "Create Computer Discovery Rule".

This opens a new window where you can enter in the criteria for matching computers you wish to find. You'll need to supply the following details:

Management Server: This is the MOM Management Server you wish to manage the discovered computers.
Rule Type: Include or Exclude.
Domain Name: Your Domain Name.
Computer Name: The name of the computer you wish to discover. You may use wildcards here.
Computer Type: Client or Server, or both.
Initial Management Mode: Choose Agent Managed to have MOM automatically install the agent. If you choose Unmanaged, MOM will not install the agent, you can then do it manually.

Note: that under the Computer Name field, this supports wild card and regular expression matching as well.

Click OK to create the rule.

Once your rule has been created, simply right click on Computer Discovery and you can then "Run Computer Discovery Now". Once the process is complete, select the appropriate container where you chose to place the discovered computers (in the above image, we chose to make any discovered computers to be Unmanaged, so we'd select the Unmanaged Computers container). If they dont appear in your console, hit F5 to refresh it.

Your Computers should now be discovered and ready to be Managed. You may now install an agent on them.

In our MOM 2005 Training Videos, we'll show you how this is done.
