To secure and provide access to resources in a Windows Domain,
Windows Server 2003 uses the concept of Share Permissions and
NTFS Permissions.
Share Permissions
Share Permissions either grant or deny access to Windows Shares.
Share Permissions only take effect when a User Accesses the
Share over the network.
NTFS Permissions
NTFS Permissions either grant or deny access to resources, such
as a file or folder. NTFS Permissions always take effect when
a User Accesses the resource, whether it is accessed locally
or over the network.
Both Share Permissions and NTFS Permissions work in conjunction
with each other to secure access to resources accessed over
the network.
In this Video on Share Permissions and NTFS Permissions, we
also highlight issues you'll face when using Deny entries. Then
we move on to discuss Inheritance, Effective Permissions and
Taking Ownership of Files and Folders.
